Powder Coating: What is it & Why you Need it

Powder coating is a term your will often hear in the visual solutions industry. So what is it and why do you need it?

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of dry coating used to finish various materials, and it is now one of the most popular types of finish to use in projects. Metals are the most common projects that are finished using the powder coating process. It’s known to give final projects a polished modern-day look that can make visual solutions look high-quality and professional. The finish can be used on many types of surfaces, including steel, plastic, and concrete, making them suitable for indoor and outdoor locations.

The General Process:

The process for powder coating requires multiple sets and is quite complex, so we’ll explain a generalized version. To start, the almost finished project will be prepped and primed to prepare for the best adhesion of the next step. This is considered the most important step, as it will control how well the powder coating adheres to the surface it is intended to protect. Then, the powder is sprayed onto the prepped surface using compressed air. After the powder has coated the working surface, the curing can begin. During this time, the surface is heated to allow the powder to melt and form a layer. Once the applied spray is cooled, the coating will harden, and the process is complete.
